UOW course cuts proposal. Stop the 888! Staff & students for a better UOW. Image of a black 8-ball hitting three balls labelled cuts, jobs, UOW.

With at least another 181 staff jobs on the line and over 650 University of Wollongong (UOW) staff impacted in some way, the proposed change to how UOW is run and how students are supported, if left unchanged, will do huge damage to our public university. This is off the back of Subject Cuts and the loss of 91 Academic Teaching Positions in early 2025.

Staff jobs in our Library, Research Office, Student Services, Faculty Offices and Specialist Research Roles are all under direct threat.

Staff and students gathered recently to demand action at an NTEU UOW community assembly.

Don’t let UOW management rip the heart out of our university. Sign the petition open to all UOW staff, UOW students and communities of support.

UOW STAFF, STUDENTS, & COMMUNITIES OF SUPPORT CALL ON UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG MANAGEMENT TO:

  1. Stop the job cuts plan at UOW: The planned Expression of Interest proposal for remaining jobs will simply put hundreds of staff through a spill and fill and hunger games’ process from July to September. This is not the way to find savings at our public university. It is creating and elevating a health and safety risk for all impacted staff and must be stopped.
  2. No forced redundancies: While some staff may soon decide to take Voluntary Redundancy, no staff member should be forced out of a job at UOW in 2025.
  3. Treat UOW staff with respect: Stop this shambolic change process. Instead, come and talk to the staff who are doing the work at UOW. Let’s talk about alternate savings that we can discuss and agree are achievable in 2025 in our work units. Don’t just ask staff to submit Feedback into a portal then produce a ‘themes of feedback’ summary in June. We don’t consider this to be genuine consultation when our jobs and careers are on the line.
  4. Stop the rot at the top: Cancel the planned appointment of more overpaid paid executive staff, including the wholly unnecessary Provost positions and office of the VC. Rather than paying Vice Chancellors and Senior Executive Staff more than the Prime Minister gets paid, let’s use what funds we have to deliver on our core mission to provide quality teaching, research and student support at UOW.

Staff Union Delegates intend to deliver this petition to University Management.
