Conversion to fixed-term and continuing employment workshop – Zoom

Date: June 19th

Time: 4pm

Register here

About this session

Are you wondering whether you might qualify for conversion from casual or fixed-term employment to a more secure form of employment under the Enterprise Agreement conversion clauses or the Fair Work Act? Or perhaps you are already working on your application. At these workshops, NTEU Industrial Officer Simon Kempton and NTEU Organiser Glen Smyth will take members through the relevant Enterprise Agreement clauses and the application process.

By the end of this session you will have a good understanding of the criteria you will need to meet to make an application for conversion, the reasons management can draw on to reject an application (and how to ensure they aren’t misused), as well as how the NTEU will provide support if your application is rejected.

About this session

As a professional staff member working at USYD, does the union-won 8-hour day seem like a fantasy or something that belongs to a different time? What if we could change the culture of overwork?

Join us on Thursday 17 July as we start our educative campaign to put fair workloads on the agenda for professional staff at the University of Sydney.

In this session we’ll examine the Enterprise Agreement clauses covering workloads, including the mechanisms for addressing overwork with your manager. The focus will be on practical ways to “manage up” and the benefits of coming together with your colleagues to address workloads.

Professional Staff PP&D and classification – Zoom

Date: October 16th

Time: 4pm

About this session

Professional Staff are required to undertake a yearly review of their performance. Casual staff can request to participate in the P&D program (and should if they might one day seek conversion). This review is not only an opportunity for management to ensure you are meeting expectations, it’s an opportunity for members to look at whether the duties they are currently performing are reflected in their position description, and if not seek an update.

Ahead of the end of year PP&D review, during this session we’ll look at the P&D process in relation to your industrial rights, including your right to request an update to your position description and a reclassification review. We’ll also discuss how to respond to claims of underperformance. And finally, we’ll also touch on goal-setting for the following year.

In this session we will look ahead to the bargaining of the next University of Sydney staff agreement to be negotiated in the latter half of 2026. We’ll explain how the NTEU approaches bargaining both nationally and at the Branch level. We won’t cover our specific claims here; this is all about understanding the process, including how bargaining representatives consult with and draw power from the NTEU membership at the University of Sydney.
